What is EEO?

Equal Employment Opportunity ensures that members of protected classes have legal rights against discrimination in their workplace.

National Origin

Your employer cannot discriminate because you are from a particular country, your ethnicity, accent, or you appear to be a specifc ethnicity.

Sex

Sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, and pregnancy are protected classes in workplace discrimination.

Sexual Harassment

You are protected from sexual harassment, unwelcome requests or advances, and other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature.

Religious

Religious beliefs such as traditional, organized religions and sincerely held ethical or moral beliefs are protected.

Retaliation

The fact that you have filed an EEO claim cannot cause additional retaliatory problems. This is the most frequents form of discrimination.

Pregnancy

An employer cannot discriminate towards a pregnant employee due to pregnancy childbirth, or related medical condition.

Race or Color

Races, characteristics associated with race, and marriage to a spouse of another race cannot cause discriminatory employment actions.

Claims are Time-sensitive

Deadline: 180 days from date of discrimination

Discrimination claims are time sensitive. The longer one waits to asserts his/her rights the more likely valuable evidence will disappear or be painted over.

EEOC

This refers to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. This entity handles enforcement of federal laws that protect employees from descrimination.

Protected Activity

This refers to the fact that federal employees are able to file claims, discuss matters with supervisors, and resist discriminatory activity without fear of retaliation from their employer.

Substantially Equal Work

Men and women must be in similar positions, with similar responsibilities when comparing pay for determining equal pay claims.

Reasonable Cause

This is the EEOC’s decision in favor of the employee’s claim of employment discrimination.
