Mass RIFs could put you at risk

If you haven’t already been targeted by one of the administrations cuts, you’re not out of the woods just yet.

The next phase of President Trump’s plans to cut the federal workforce is here in the form of large-scale reductions in force – or RIFs.

Federal agencies have until March 13 to come up with plans for cutting their forces. Then, by April 14, they’ll need to have drawn up new plans for structuring their smaller workforces.

Job cuts will begin with people who are in positions that aren’t required by statute – meaning there’s no rule or regulation that says that position is necessary. Those who face furloughs when the government shuts down would also be in the earliest category to face cuts.

What Can I Do

Even though it seems like there’s a new initiative to cut workers each day, you don’t have to wait it out and hope you don’t lose your job.

There are several options that could give you peace of mind and the security you need:

1. If you’re in a position you know could be cut – like one that isn’t required by statute, or one that gets furloughed when the government shuts down – consider requesting a transfer to a more secure job in the federal workforce.

2. If you’ve reached retirement age, retire now before a separation damages your benefits. You can learn more about if this is possible for you in our blog.

3. If your agency offers it, accept a VERA offer. This would allow you to retire early, but there are some drawbacks, like missing out on years of service and uncertain health coverage. To learn more about this offer, read our full blog or watch our webinar about the new federal workforce changes.

4. If you’ve got at least 18 months under FERS and a medical condition that prevents you from doing at least one of your job duties, Federal Disability Retirement is a great option. It will let you get another job in the private sector while also allowing you to keep gaining years of federal service and paying you monthly. If you want learn more about this benefit, check out our step-by-step guide.

If you’re worried that you’ll wake up tomorrow to find that your job has been eliminated, don’t wait another day before you plan out your next steps.
