Does dealing with the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) feel like an uphill battle? Take heart – you’re not the only one. Many federal workers struggle to understand how to navigate the government’s HR department, especially when it comes to disability retirement. Our goal here is to demystify the OPM with practical insights so you can manage your benefits with confidence.
What is OPM?
As the name implies, the Office of Personnel Management oversees federal employees. They handle key aspects of your job like your benefits and federal pension, help with HR needs for different agencies, ensure background checks are done right and supervise retirement, including disability retirement.
Why Understanding OPM Matters
Getting a handle on how the OPM works can not only help you make the most of their resources and support, but it can significantly impact your retirement process. While government red tape can be frustrating, being prepared for what’s ahead can help you avoid costly mistakes and unnecessary delays.
Common Questions About OPM
1. How long will it take for the OPM to review my Federal Disability Retirement application?
We generally see the OPM making an initial decision in anywhere from 9-12 months. But it depends on how straightforward your application is. Shorter decisions are possible and claimants with terminal illnesses can be expedited. The OPM may request more information from you during their review, which can lengthen the process.
2. What is OPM’s approval rate for Federal Disability Retirement applications?
It’s understandable to want hard facts when you’re waiting for a decision on your application, but the OPM doesn’t release specific approval data. However, we handle thousands of cases each year and are seeing more and more denials. The good news is we cover two appeals if the OPM denies your claim, and continue to maintain a 99% success rate for our clients.
3. What is the current state of the OPM backlog?
The OPM is notorious for having a lengthy backlog of cases pending decisions, which is one reason dealing with them can be stressful. But last year, they introduced a new strategy to improve how they handle retirement services. As of May 2024, the backlog was just over 14,000, which is an 8-year low.
Challenges clearly remain, though, making professional guidance at this stage incredibly valuable.
4. Can I contact the OPM?
While it can be tempting to reach out to the OPM for updates, it generally won’t speed up the process. And while there’s no legal action we take to move the OPM along, we’re ready to handle all the communications, reducing your stress and making sure your information is passed along correctly.
